VocabularySpellingCity is an online resource that provides everything you need for the study of the meaning and spelling of words. There is both a free and a premium membership available. Our family is reviewing the premium membership. With the premium membership you have access to additional teaching tools as well as grading and tracking. This website has so much to offer. There are several prepared lists on a variety of topics that you can import into your account for your children to use or you can create your own lists. You can assign specific games and activities to complete each day or they can pick and choose on their own. There are lots of games available to help your students learn to spell the words and to increase their vocabulary. One of Hannah’s favorite games was Hang Mouse.
In addition to the online content there is also an app that you can use with the program. It is available for Android, Kindle, and Apple products. We tested out the Android version on my Nook HD 7 inch. On the 7 inch there were a few screens where the graphics overlapped but it was still usable. Not all the activities are available through the mobile app but these are clearly marked on the assignment set-up page. With the premium membership you can log in on the mobile app and the assignments that are available will come up and are easy to use on the app. Like the online version students can work through assignment lists or can pick and choose their own activities from the available list. I didn’t really see anything helpful on the parent log in because it could not connect automatically with an internet browser.
I only used the assignment page a few times during the review period but I found it very easy to set up. I loved the record keeping ability because I could easily log in and see what my children had worked on either through assigned activities or things they choose on their own.
We did not take advantage of any of the prepared lists but I found VocabularySpellingCity to be just what a needed as a companion to the spelling curriculum we were already using. I found created my own lists a quick and easy process and in just a couple of afternoons I had the whole year’s worth of spelling lists added to the website. After you have added the words you are then able to choose the definition and sentence you think is best for that particular word. Also if a word is not available through the website you are given the opportunity to add your definition and sentence to go with the word. Always double-check because I found that all but once the few times a word didn’t show up with a meaning was because I had accidentally spelled the word incorrectly. With our curriculum they test daily and have to complete the test correctly twice before moving on to the next list. So they would use the practice test until they had gotten their first perfect score and then would use the final test the next day. They would use the print option each day after taking the test so that we had a printed record for their portfolios.
What I loved was that by using the program it freed up my time to work on other things or with the other child. Also, having the vocabulary component was a great added value to me. Now instead of just learning to spell the word they were also able to study the word and truly understand the meaning of the word which would make it more likely to become a part of their vocabulary. I required my children to complete the vocabulary test once while they were working on mastering the spelling of the words. I also assigned or suggested other vocabulary activities as well.
Another great feature as a new user was the large number of tutorial videos available to help you understand and use all the available resources to their full potential.
I found VocabularySpellingCity to be a great addition to our homeschool life and will continue to use it in the future. I’m so happy I found this resource. Premium Membership for a family of up to five students is only $29.99 for a full year of use. If you have a very large family you can purchase a classroom membership for up to 25 students for $49.99.
Well you can tell we really loved VocabularySpellingCity. You now know how our family made use of it. Check the graphic below to see how other families implemented the many features of this online resource.
