O is for One Grain of Rice
This week I am offering up two O books. The first book is One Grain of Rice by Demi. This is a mathematical folk tale. It tells the story of a young girl in India. The prince has been storing up grain but when the famine comes instead of the prince sharing the grain he decides to be stingy and hoard it for himself. One day some grain falls on its way to the palace. The girl brings it to the prince who decides to reward her honest. All she asks for is one of grain of rice today and that each day for a month the prince double the gift. At the beginning the prince thinks he’s the winner in this bargain but with each day he begins to release how smart the young lady really was. It’s a great story and the illustrations are fascinating. Flowering Minds has a great review and ideas for this book. Pinterest has some great ideas including coloring rice to use for art or sensory ideas. Teach Beside Me has even more ideas to enjoying learning along with the book. Illuminations focus direction on math learning with more depth.
The second books is an old favorite. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. This is a classic fun rhyming tale that is perfect for those beginning to read. I remember having fun reading it to my children and then later having them read it for themselves. Pinterest can be a great source of ideas for this and other Dr. Seuss books. Homeschool Share Also offers lots of printables for a number of the Dr. Seuss books. Web English Teacher offers several links to a variety of activities. Seussville is a website full of activities for your child to enjoy.
