Veritas Press has been around for a while provide high quality materials in the area of classical homeschooling. They have gathered together materials from several sources as well as produced their own materials that enhance the study of world history, along with other subject areas. In addition to the print material they also offer online course that can be completed live or in a self-paced method.
Veritas Press – Self-Paced History – New Testament, Greece, and Rome
Hannah has been reviewing the Self-Paced History program. Also, we used the New Testament, Greece, and Rome Flashcard set as well. Specifically, she has been completing the lesson for New Testament, Greece, and Rome. The Self-Paced History program covers five different levels from Creation to Present. Each Self-Paced History lesson allows the students to watch the video lessons, participate in quizzes, and receive a grade. As students work through the levels they are provided with a chronological view of history from a Biblical perspective. Each level features different characters to help walk the student through the lesson and make learning and memorizing fun.
New Testament, Greece, and Rome covers 32 important historical events through the use of drama, song, games, and online quizzes. From the student page the student can log in, review previous lessons, continue where they left off, or review their grades. From the parent log in you can check your child’s progress and see the grades they have earned.
Students can work through the program at their own pace and have a full year to complete the program. Once a child has taken a test or quiz the grade recorded is final. Students can only complete the lessons in order and can not move ahead but they can go back and review any previous lesson they have completed.
Flashcards for each level are available to help the student review the material before the tests but it is recommended that they don’t use study material while taking the tests. The 5×7 flashcards have art work and the name of the event on the front of the card. The back of the card lists the name of the event and time period. It also has a summary of the event. Finally, the back of the card lists suggested resources for further study. For a more in-depth study you can add a literature study kit for books that complement the history level being studied.
How We Used Veritas Press
Hannah only used the self-paced history and the flashcards. We didn’t add any additional literature to our study. She completed 2 or 3 lessons each week during the study period and will continue to work through the course this summer. We already had the set of flashcards because I had used them years ago along with another history program.
Feelings on Veritas Press – Self-Paced History
Hannah really loved the Self-Paced History course. I let her decided which level she wanted to complete. This has been one course I haven’t had any problem getting Hannah to work on and she is already asking to do the next level. I have always loved their history flashcards with the chance to review historical events and great artwork. Using them along with the Self-Paced History course makes them even better. I have hesitated to use Veritas Press in the past because the amount of reading required seemed overwhelming to me and my children but the using the Self-Paced History was so easy. Each lesson was engaging and the mix of dramatic characters, games, and quizzes made learning easy. It was so exciting to hear Hannah tell me amount the different things she was learning as we were traveling in the car.
My only complaint was the fact that once a quiz or test was completed the grade had to stand. While I can understand the reasoning I think I would like the option to maybe have both the original score and a retake score available so you could see that they perhaps restudy the material and had mastered it.
The New Testament, Greece and Rome Flashcard set sells for $19.95.
