My 17 year-old participated in the online lecture class Mother Should I Trust the Government and that is product we will be reviewing. They offer a variety of classes throughout the year. Check the class schedule for the current listing of classes available. The class took place once a week for two-hours for a total of 8 classes. The class was conducted by Jake Jacobs in a lecture style. A physical copy of the book Mother Should I Trust the Government was sent along to us to go along with the class. It is recommended each week to read the chapter for the week before the class. There is a chat box open on the screen to allow interaction with online students and the teacher. There are also “real” students in the classroom during the class that also interact and participate. Each week the class is recorded and is available to be reviewed to go over the information or if a student has to miss a class on any given night. This class has no required written work. We also received a copy of the book Mother Should I Trust the Government by Jake Jacobs Ph. D. to supplement the online class.
The class covered the topic of the American government system. It explores the heritage and roots of the American Experience and the role of the different founding father’s played in our history. It also explores the deeper roots found in live of William Wallace.
Also, there are lots of references given and suggestions are given so that students can further study the different topics presented.
Use in Our Home
I had my son log in each week for the two-hour class. He was also required to read the assigned chapter/chapters before the class. Before starting the class we followed the easy instructions to check out our computer and to set up the required software. After the initial set up logging in was easy and Joshua was able to easily get connected each week for all the classes. I attended some of the classes live and others I watched later in the week using the links provided each week in the email we received.
There were several things I loved about this product. I was glad my son had a chance to participate in a more traditional lecture style class. He had to learn manage his time throughout the day so that he was ready to log in each week for the class. He also had to make the time during the week to prepare for the class by reading the required homework.
It was fun to read the comments of the other online students as well as hearing the interaction with the students that our sitting in the classroom.
I also appreciated the fact that Dr. Jacobs lets students know that there will be things that they might not agree with and that it is important for them to become as informed as possible to make up their own minds.
One of the things I found especially interesting was looking at the story of Robin Hood in a whole new way. I learned a lot about the different schools of political thought such as little R republicans.
Joshua said that it was a great class and he learned a lot. It helped him start to think about the need to research who he might want to vote for since he will be old enough to vote in 2016.
They are different courses offered at different times so make sure you check out the online schedule to find out more.
This class was designed for middle and high school students due to the depth of the discussions.
