The Company – Victus Study Skills System
Victus is Latin for “Way of Life” and the Victus Study Skills System offers a system that will help students learn better habits that will help them not only during their school years but will help them learn skills that can be applied throughout life. Students often hear that they need to study more but many don’t know how to do this effectively. The Victus Study Skills System was developed by teachers who have worked with students and know what they really need to make their study effective. Victus can be used by schools or homeschoolers. Many topics are covered in the program that helped improve their study habits. Topics included in the study are setting goals, time management, test talking, effective notes, and reading comprehension. All of these different areas lead to more effective study habits. The website is full of videos that explain all the different parts of the system.
As the name implies the Victus Study Skills System is a system. It is built on three foundational ideas. The first is for the student to understand where they are now. Then they work at figuring out where they want to be. Finally, with an understanding where they are and where they are heading they can begin to formulate how they will get there. The lessons work the student through this process.
The Product – Teacher Edition and Student Workbook
We reviewed both the Teacher Edition and the Student Workbook. Both are spiral bound paperback books.
The Teacher Edition starts out with an introduction to the Victus Study Skill System which goes into the philosophy of the program. It helps the teacher understand the purpose behind the program. The next session helps goes over some general directions on teaching the System that can also be used when teaching other things. The third section contains the lessons. There are ten lessons that should take about 30 minutes each. There are course information and copies of the student workbook pages with the answers. The final section on the book has an appendix that contains extra exercises and other items to enhance or reinforce the lessons.
The Student Workbook helps the student work through the three main points of the Victus Study Skill System. As they complete the lessons they will have pages that help them exam where they are today. Then it helps them to think about what kind of goals they have for themselves. What do they see as their life mission. Finally, there workbook helps them to exam and practice the skills needed to move toward their personal goals. The workbook is consumable and each student in the family will need their own workbook. Because the pages contain checklists and tables you really need the student workbook to use this program effectively.
How We Used It At Our House
I spent a couple of days reading through the introductory material a few times before I began to teach the lessons. After we started the lessons I would teach the lesson and then give Joshua a couple of days to work through the workbook pages for that lesson.
I was excited to start my review of the Victus Study Skills System because I felt that Joshua could benefit not just from learning better study skills in general but also improve the other aspects for life such as goal setting and time management. The system contains wonderful materials and ideas. The way that things are broken down into different activities make it easy for the student to take an in-depth look at themselves and their goals. But it just didn’t seem to connect for Joshua. He seemed to give it a minimal effort. I think part of the problem was that I wasn’t sure how to round things out or how to draw my son in.
I noticed that they have two other products that we did not review one is a DIY Student Workbook that contains all the information needed for the student to work through the material on their own. But the other product is the Classroom Video. The video shows the process in action and shows the ten lessons being taught to a group of students and teachers. I think that would help me both as the teacher and my son as the student. I think that I might wait a few months, purchase the video and make another run at Victus Study Skills System.
I love everything that is covered in this course. The idea that the system is taught with three main ideas that help a student build not only study skills but also help develop life skills makes the Victus program different from other study skills programs. Despite are lackluster results I think it’s a great product and look forward to making a few changes and trying again.
