Technology and Change, Change, and More Change
Unless you have been hiding in a cave you have to notice there have been tons of changes in the last 20 years in the area of technology. When I started homeschooling in 1992 the closest thing to the internet was forums on Prodigy. If you needed to get a hold of someone you might be able to call their beeper. And books well there were all printed on paper.
So What Will You Technology Will You Embrace
Every family has to make their own choices regarding technology. Some will take it all on and other will reject it all. Most families will be somewhere in between. As you get ready to go back to school you have to decide what you will use and how it will be a part of your schooling.
Some of my Favorite Technology Choices
E-Reader – I was so sure that I would never give up paper but well after using a variety of e-readers over the last few years I’m really a convert. They give you the ability to have a large collection of books at your finger tips. They take up a lot less space than paper books. You can usually update to new versions of a book if they are released. Depending on the reader you are using you can make notes and highlight. Also, if you have a child with reading challenges many of the readers offer text-to-speech options. Those that also offer tablet like options you can also play learning games or go online to do research. The downside of course is that you need to make sure you have backups in case of device failure. Most e-book purchases don’t offer the ability to resell when you have finished using them.
Smart Phone – This was another one of those devices I saw no need for. I need a phone to make and receive calls. But them I saw the good side of being able to send a quick text without interrupting my teaching time. Then when I got a full smart phone I love the ability to look up a word quickly or do a quick search without having to get up and go to the computer. It makes a quick reference guide. Also, there are several apps now that allow the parent keep up with online learning or planning this is especially helpful if you are a working homeschool parent. The downside is letting it take over you life and getting so caught up that you forget to give your children your attention.
Computers and Learning – Computers have been a great addition to our homeschooling over the years. Add the internet and you have a whole bucket full of learning opportunities. There are so many resources now available to homeschool families. There are lots of websites offering supplemental, course, and full curriculum choices. Some choices include web-based learning and other provide live online learning. Our family has had the opportunity to try out several of these and information on these can be found in the review series here on this blog. Also, used wisely there are all kinds of You Tube videos on a variety of topics. So the downside of course is that if you are not careful you could find things that are suitable for you family. Also, you have to guard against too much time in front of the screen and need to remember to take breaks.
Change can be Good
I think change can be good and I have been excited about the opportunities that have presented themselves as a result of the technology now available. I love being able to easily stay in touch with my children, have a quick reference device in my hand, and the ability to save a little bit of space on my shelves. I would have loved having the opportunity to have text-to-speech available when my children was struggling with his reading. So while I will continue to be mindful of use abuse I look forward to what new changes will be on the horizon.
