What is Service
Service means the action of helping or doing work for someone. Community service is when you give this service to the community.
Types of Service
Service can be done as a group, family or as an individual. Service can be rendered to a family member or neighbor. It can be performed for your church. It can also be given to any number or local agency that need help. It might be done overseas.
Sometimes service might be a very practical hands on way. It can also be more of a support position like helping with a fund-raising, manning a booth, preparing mailings, or promoting a cause on social media.
Importance of Service
Service can be valuable for many reasons. It can help young people see the needs of others in their community. It gives them a chance to think beyond themselves. If you volunteer in a variety of settings they have a chance to try out different types of jobs or working environments. Plus, of course it helps those who are receiving the service.
Service and Back to School
So why talk about service at part of a back to school series? Well, as you are working on your school plans you will want to make sure you make time for service as part of those plans. Some families spend time throughout the year on participating in service projects and other families concentrate their service during off times from school.
Certain service projects are seasonal in nature and you might need to sign up ahead of time to participate so you need to know what opportunities you want to look for so that you can be prepared.
You can make the planning of service projects part of your school plan in a project based learning. Some schools will allow students to earn school credit for a certain number of community service hours. Also, many schools are now requiring community service to earn a diploma. I know we are homeschooling but it doesn’t hurt to explore what might be required or allowed under the homeschool laws in your state.
Also, community service can be used in the future when applying for college. Places that you have volunteer can be used on a resume as well.
Service in Our Family
My oldest all of his service at one location. He volunteered once a week from the time he was in 6th grade until he graduated. The rest of my children have done the majority of their service hours through one organization but this organization takes the children to a variety of places and they complete a wide selection of jobs. So they have had lots of different experiences but we have one person to list as the reference on future application.
So give service a try it can be a win, win for everyone involved.
