Supplies – Get Your Shopping Done
As the public schools open back up it might be a good time to stock up on your own school There are lots of things on sale, some states off sales tax-free shopping days, and everything is right there all together and easy to find.
Supply Shopping Can Be Fun
I remember in my own public school days that I love the feel of getting new things at the beginning of the school. There was something about feeling the thrill of a new beginning. There were years when our homeschool years just seemed to flow from one to another without a clearly defined ending and beginning. One of the things I used to really set the year off was shopping for school supplies. Because it seemed we were on the road a lot with the activities of older children or my own obligations on the board of our local homeschool group I created two sets of supplies.
The first set of supplies was our traveling school kits. I let each child pick out their own backpack and lunch box. That way they had a place to store supplies when on the road and it made handing out lunches during a break in a meeting or at the park quick and easy. Also, the pack usually contained lined paper, plain paper, mechanical pencils, and colored pencils. It usually had a pencil sharpener as well. Then we could add what ever else we needed for the day before we left the house.
Our at home list usually included crayons, colored pencils, paper of all kinds, glue, and notebooks for the kids. Mom would get a new set of dry erase makers, pens, and mechanical pencils. Depending on sales I would usually try to pick up a carton of printer paper as well.
And art or project supplies is a completely different list and will vary according to your family’s needs and interests.
A Word About Color Pencils
If your child is really into art you want to make sure that really good pencils. And if you have the money better pencils are always nice but if your main use is to underline things or simple coloring the cheap pencils will get the job done. Also, I learned the hard way that colored pencils are much better in a travel bag than crayons for one simple reason, the don’t melt. Melted crayons in the backseat of your minivan leave a lasting impression if you know what I mean.
Supplies for Planning
As stated in yesterday’s post about planning your school year you will need to shop for what ever style planner you intend to use for your family. Nothing is worse than getting things a few weeks later and trying to remember what you did. So having your recording method ready and available will make things much easier.
Whether you are new to homeschooling or have decided to revamp the way you school you may need some bigger items. Do you want an extra table to leave incomplete projects out on. Are your children older and ready to work on their own in their rooms and want their own work space. Do you have a computer that needs a desk or if the family uses laptops do you need some kind of lap desk to work from.
Maybe you are planning on getting some new electronics for your school. There are so many different tools that you can add to your enhance your school but make sure you shop around and get the best fit for the money you have to spend. Every device has pros and cons and only can decide what the most important features are for you.
Budget for Supplies
One of the best things you can do is make sure you know what your budget is before you begin shopping. You might need to save up for larger items. Also, nothing lasts for make sure you are ready to pick up new supplies like pens and paper when needed.
