The Brinkman Adventures is a radio drama that presents real life missionary stories enfolded in the stories of a family who travel together to help missionaries and their families. While the overall show is a radio drama it does share real life missionary stories. If you have any doubt the Real Stories section of the website will set the record straight. As you explore each season, episode by episode you have the chance to see videos, pictures, and text that tell the real story behind the episodes. There is also a Just for Fun section that has some printable line drawings that students could add color to while listening to many of stories from Season 1. Not sure if you will like listening to radio drama the website even provides the opportunity to listen to one episode to give you a feel for the show. So far there are two season available on the website and they can be purchased in either a CD or Digital Download version.
Listening to Season 2
Our family listen to the episodes of The Brinkman Adventures – Season 2 – Episodes 13-24 in the Digital Download format. The season starts out with the family preparing for a trip to Belize and along the way they encounter many different people and end up meeting others that share even more missionary stories. The family not only encounters their own adventures during their travels but get to hear about the work of missionaries in China as well. When necessary there is a warning at the beginning of an episode to alert families. Although my kids are older I appreciate that extra care.
How We Used the MP3 Files
We spent time over several days listening to the episodes together. One afternoon we sat around and ate pizza while listening to a few episodes in a row for a fun family time. After listening to the episodes we would go back and look through the real stories section.
I have always loved Radio Dramas and I was excited to give The Brinkman Adventures a try. I was not disappointed at all. The episodes are professional and well done. I love how there is a lot to learn about from listening to the episodes and exploring more on the website. There are lighthearted families stories interspersed with more dramatic missionary stories. One of the most intense stories was the one centering around child slavery. It was also sobering to remember that some of the stories have to be changed or families photos have to be hidden because of the risk and danger to the families serving in some of the more dangerous areas of the world. Also, having a son and daughter-in-law heading to Afghanistan in a few months makes those dangers feel a bit more real. The digital format was easy to use on our computer and since they were in the MP3 format they could also be loaded onto other devices or even loaded on to a flash drive for listening in my car. My daughter thought it was nice that you could go to the website and see the pictures and learn about the real story behind the episode. While she enjoyed the radio drama she missed having a visual such as a cartoon. Which is funny because while I’m a very visual person I really enjoy the ability to use my imagination to make up my own pictures. My son like the idea that the overall story was broken into episode so that it could be listening to a little bit at a time. He also felt like he learned a lot. As I said before I really enjoyed The Brinkman Adventures. Our family only used the episodes for listening enjoyment I could easily see how the episodes could be used as a starting point for other studies such as history, geography, or even science.
The Brinkman Adventures is available in both CD or MP3 format. There prices are suggested donations but it is important to remember that your donations are helping to support their mission. The stories are suitable for the whole family although there is a warning before more intense stories. Both Season 1 and Season 2
